VI 4Employability / Getting Ready for Work
A series of 2 hour workshops designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to seek employment. The workshops will provide participants with the opportunity to:

  • Build self-esteem and confidence;
  • Identify existing experience, skills and qualities;
  • Explore and address barriers to work;
  • Gain a good understanding of the process to confidently search, apply and undertake an interview for a job.

These workshops can be delivered as ‘one-offs’, as selected combinations or as a complete series.

Workshop 1: Building Self-Esteem and Confidence

Aims:

  • To build participants’ self-esteem and confidence
  • To enable participants to recognise positive aspects of themselves
  • To enable participants to identify interests / things which will help them feel good – both generally, and about themselves

Content:

  • Relaxation exercise
  • My favourite things
  • Reframing self-thoughts
  • Anchoring confidence / good feelings
  • Valuing myself
  • Finding a Mission Statement

Workshop 2: Positive Thinking: Experience, Skills and Qualities

Aims:

  • To identify existing experience, skills and qualities
  • To understand what ‘transferrable skills’ means, and identify which ones you have
  • To explore ways of increasing experience and skills

Content:

  • Roles and Skills
  • Gaining experience and confidence – the role of volunteering to prepare for the world of work
  • Acting positively in difficult situations

Workshop 3: Getting Work Ready

Aims:

  • To consider what changes you want / need to make to move forwards and towards work
  • To identify barriers and / or personal blockages to moving forwards and how to address these
  • To identify practical steps to prepare for work
  • To identify what support is needed (personal, practical, etc.)

Content:

  • What do you want / need to change
  • Returning to work – the issues and how to overcome them
  • Get out of your head and into your body
  • Unsticking the stuckness
  • Recognise and release fear
  • Action planning

Workshop 4: Identifying and Looking for Work

Aims:

  • To identify what job or type of job you would like
  • To identify what jobs would be suitable / appropriate / realistic for your current situation
  • To gain an overview of where and how to look for the work you want

Content:

  • Visioning
  • Identifying your needs in terms of employment (times, location, etc.)
  • Job search – what it is, how to go about it, where to look
  • Action planning

Workshop 5: Completing an Application Form Effectively

Aims:

  • To understand what makes a good application
  • To know how to write an appropriate Personal Statement

Content:

  • The purpose of an application form
  • The do’s and don’t’s of completing an application form
  • The Personal Statement – how to go about it and what to include

Workshop 6: Job Interviews

Aims:

  • To know how to prepare effectively for a job interview
  • To learn and practice strategies to undertake a good interview

Content:

  • Preparing for interviews – the practicalities
  • Interview techniques – staying cool, calm and confident

Workshop 7: CV Writing

Aims:

  • To know how to produce a good CV
  • To take away a draft CV outline specific to themselves

Content:

  • What should go in a CV
  • Language and structure used
  • How a CV should look
